Lesson 5: Melody #15 - Ode to Joy (Multiple Keys)

Melody #15 - Ode to Joy (Multiple Keys)

Now that we have learned 5 major keys and 5 minor keys, in this lesson we will learn Ode to Joy again, but this time in all 10 of these keys.

In the sheet music that you can download above, you will see a version of Ode to Joy that has 10 different keys.

We go from C Major to A minor, then D Major to G Major, G Minor to Bb major, B minor to D minor, and then F Major to E minor.

Of course, this way of writing a melody is very unusual, but it is a good way of seeing how the keys relate to each other. Some key changes sound very smooth and natural, while others feel a bit jarring - but that's all part of the fun!

Pay attention to the dynamics as well - they add a fun color to this melody, providing bursts of loudness and softness.

Instructions:

  1. As with before, learn the right hand and the left hand separately.
  2. Download the counting version if needed
  3. When combining the two hands, make sure the notes played on the same beat are played together
  4. Try to emphasize the differences between the different keys - notice how the key change adds or changes the energy of the melody.
